が、久依子が得意げに寝袋を敷いていると、横でパタパタと椎也が手を振った。
「しかしですね、マスター」
「なんだ？」
「マスターを床に寝かせるというのは、ちょっと」
むっ。
久依子は寝袋を敷く手を止めて、眉を寄せながら椎也を見つめた。椎也は相変わらずの惚けた顔で、久依子ににこりと微笑みかける。思わず久依子は目をそらした。
「べ、別にいいだろう？ 私がいいと言ってるんだ」
「いーやーでーす。この季節に寝袋なんかで寝たら、人間は風邪引いちゃいますよ？」
「まあ、確かに……」
「ベッドはマスターが使ってください。僕は、寝袋をお借りします」
そう言われると、頑固者の久依子は、素直にうんと言えないところがある。だいたい、椎也にベッドを使わせようというのがそもそもの目的なのに、その椎也に言われて前言を翻すのは、なんか悔しいではないか。
しばし久依子は腕組みして考え込み、やがてぽんと手を打った。
で、結局。
二人並んでベッドに潜り込み、天井を見上げたところで、久依子は、はたと我に返った。
――はっ！？ 何をやってるんだ、私は！
思いついた時は最高のアイディアだと思ったのである。二人でベッドを使えばいいじゃないか、と。だがよくよく考えてみると、久依子は女であり、椎也はオートマトンとはいえ――
ちらりと横を見ると、なぜかじっとこっちを見つめていた椎也が、満面の笑みを返してくる。
久依子は全身にぞわぞわと悪寒が走るのを感じて、慌てて寝返りを打った。悪寒が走ったはずなのに、体中が熱くてたまらない。肌という肌から、緊張の汗が吹き出す。
男なのだ、椎也は。今の今まで意識すらしなかったが。
「し、椎也っ」
気を紛らわそうと椎也の名を呼ぶが、声は思いっきり裏返っていた。
「はい？」
「あのな……昼間は、ありがとう。お前がいなかったら死んでいたかもしれない」
「どういたしまして」
背中に感じる。椎也が、じっとこちらを見つめているのを。
紛らわせなくては。ごまかさなくては。この変な気分を。
「あのな……椎也」
「はい」
「父さんや母さんが何と扱おうと、私はお前を友達と思う。いいか？」
椎也が沈黙した。
久依子は突然の静寂に戸惑って、恐る恐る、視線を後ろへ向けた。しかし、椎也が揺らぎもしない目をこちらに向けているのを知ると、慌てて再び背中を向ける。
「……はい。嬉しいです、マスター」
久依子は再び震え上がった。もう絶対に椎也に顔は見せられない。耳まで火照って真っ赤になっているのが、自分でも分かるのだ。相手はオートマトンだ！ 機械だ！ 何を意識してるんだ！ そう自分に言い聞かせる。なのに全く鼓動は収まろうとしない。
「ば……ばかっ！ そんなこと言う奴があるか！」
「えー？ でも、本当にそう思うんですよ？」
「だからだろっ！ もういい、寝ろ！」
「はい。お休みなさい、マスター」
今度こそ、椎也は完全に沈黙した。
背中の気配が消えていくのを感じて、久依子はゆっくりと、寝返りを打った。目の前に椎也の寝顔が現れて、久依子は思わずのけぞる。こうして間近で見ても、全くオートマトンだとは分からない。
久依子には、どうしても、椎也が機械だとは思えないのだ。言い聞かせたって無駄なのだ。
今の久依子に、それを認めることはできなかったが。
「あけすけに思うこと言ってくれて……」
そうぽつりと呟くと、久依子は仰向けになり、頭まですっぽりフトンをかぶった。
「ばかっ！」
